Gerber E-Z Out Rescue Knife

I have been a fan of Gerber products for years, liking the combination of design innovation and ruggedness wrapped up in a reliable, purposeful product. The Gerber E-Z Out is a good example of this, proving itself useful in many situations so far.

It’s blunt tip means that you can more safely use it next to skin or any other surface that you would rather not puncture when cutting next to it!

The clip on the back is quite springy so holds the knife securely in whatever pocket or groove you place it in, and the shape is quite ergonomic.

I tend to use mine for climbing or whenever I’m working with ropes. So far i have yet to use it properly in anger (i.e. to cut a rope in an emergency) and to be quite frank I hope I never do. But I have used it to cut ropes and lines to length, as well as cutting fabric instead of tuff-cuts. It’s performance here has been above and beyond what I expected, and I am very happy to have it by my side in case I do need to cut a line in a hurry.

The only improvement I could hope to make to the design would be to add somewhere to tie a lanyard to. That would mean I could hang it from a karabiner on my harness, whereas at the moment it lives in the pocket of whatever trousers or shorts I’m wearing at the time. (2011 Note - the new Gerber E-Z Out models come with a lanyard hole in the main body of the knife!)
